They told me how to live. I said no.
There was a time when I thought the only way to survive was to follow the script.
The one handed to me before I was even old enough to question it.
The script said:
Get married (to a man, of course).
Have kids.
Fit into the “good girl” mould.
Smile. Be agreeable. Don’t make people uncomfortable.
Above all else - do not disrupt the status quo.
And for decades, I did my best to play the part.
I checked the boxes.
I followed the rules.
I became the version of myself that was acceptable, at least to everyone else.
But inside? I was slowly dying.
Because here’s the thing about following a script that wasn’t written for you:
- It will slowly kill you.
- It will make you think that something is wrong with you, when the truth is, the script was wrong all along.
I spent years thinking I was the problem. That I just wasn’t trying hard enough to be happy. That I should be grateful for the life I had. That the nagging feeling of emptiness and discomfort was just my fault.
Until one day, I realized the truth:
I wasn’t broken. The script was.
So I did the only thing I could do.
I burned it.
I ripped it to shreds and started over.
I came out at 46.
I let go of the life I was told I should want and built one that finally felt like mine.
And let me tell you—
Burning the script is terrifying.
Burning the script is messy.
Burning the script will cost you relationships, comfort, and certainty.
But you know what costs more?
- Waking up every day as a version of yourself you don’t even recognize.
- Staying small to keep others comfortable.
- Swallowing your truth until you don’t even know what it is anymore.
Burning the Script Isn’t About Rebellion - It’s About Survival.
This isn’t just my story.
It’s the story of every person who has ever felt trapped by expectation.
The queer kid who was told they weren’t allowed to exist.
The woman who was told her worth was in how much she could give.
The person who spent decades hiding pieces of themselves to be “acceptable.”
If you’ve ever been told who to be, how to act, or what your life should look like, this movement is for you.
Because here’s what they don’t tell you:
You were never meant to fit in.
The world doesn’t need another perfectly curated, socially acceptable version of you.
It needs the real you. The loud you. The too-much you. The unapologetic you.
You don’t have to follow the script they gave you.
You don’t have to explain yourself to people who will never understand.
You don’t have to live small because it makes others feel more comfortable.
Burn the script and write your own damn story.
Because your life?
It was never meant to be a performance.
Are You Ready?
If this resonates, if you’re tired of playing by someone else’s rules, if you’ve been waiting for permission to take up space this is it.
If you’re done living by someone else’s rules. Let’s burn the script together.
